An Elevator Pitch

Regardless of what type of product or service that you sell, it is extremely important to have a concise, effective elevator pitch. When you are in a networking situation, you must be able to convey to someone in ten seconds or less what you do and why someone should do business with you.

The term "elevator pitch" is rooted in the amount of time that you have on an average elevator ride to explain to someone what it is that you do. The average elevator ride is probably ten seconds. There are five components to a solid elevator pitch:

  1. Credibility and interest
  2. Time
  3. Who/Where
  4. What/Results/#'s
  5. Ask a closing question

Allow me to share with you our elevator pitch and then we will take a closer look at the components.

"My name is Jason Vaughn with Sales Partners Central Ohio. I am part of a team that over the past ten years has helped thousands of business owners, entrepreneurs, sales teams and sales professionals worldwide increase their sales anywhere from 15-85% in as little as six weeks. How many of you would be interested in that?"

  1. I stated my name and the name of my company to establish credibility. I am also part of a team which is much bigger than myself. If you are new to an industry or organization, I strongly recommend this verbiage!
  2. Even if I am new, I am part of a team that has produced results for ten years.
  3. We have helped thousands of business owners, entrepreneurs, sales teams and sales professionals worldwide. Once again I am referring to a team effort that builds more credibility than I could create on my own.
  4. Use specific numbers if possible. What results have your clients experienced? Our clients have seen an increase in sales anywhere from 15-85% in as little as six weeks. Once again, be specific.
  5. Always ask a closing question i.e. ASK FOR THE ORDER!

I would suggest getting together with your sales teams and creating an effective elevator pitch. It is a powerful tool while generating new leads as well as in networking events.
