Marketing

Marketing seems to be this large mysterious beast that plague small business owners. It’s viewed as some sort of very costly ordeal that has no firm body to grasp you brain around. I would like to clear up some of that. Marketing is simply sales in a different medium. Marketing is filtering out who is interested in your product or service, that’s all.

To effectively market means you are effectively filtering out who’s interested and channeling those leads to your company and letting the sales team do the rest. There are many many ways to market. There is everything from direct response ads and guerilla tactics to standard television ads and radio spots.

Now a lot of what medium you use depends really on what your budgeted for. But more importantly what your customers use as a way of getting information. For example you certainly would not advertise a product targeted at teenagers in the business section of the newspaper or in the paper at all for that matter. How many teenagers ever even touch a newspaper? very few.

Now, direct response ads at a skate-park or a colorful flashing brochure at the paintball store would be a much better marketing plan for that particular genre of product. The key to marketing is the research. You absolutely need to do your research and take your time on it. Develop an action plan and how to best leverage you company to increase your exposure to the marketplace. The best question to answer when researching is what are your prospects thinking at night while lying in bed? Then where would they find the answers to that question.
